"Bobby Browwwwwn!" + Whitney Houston Mix

Oh gosh...what would I ever to without TMZ the gossip website. I first found out about Michael Jackson's death on their site a few years ago; and then a couple of weeks ago I found out about Whitney Houston's passing from them as well. Another great voice and singer gone too soon...also presumably from an overdose of some type of narcotic. Ahhhh, Whitney...

When I think of Whitney Houston, I think of my middle and high school years, going to the record store and grabbing the latest vinyl record or cassette of her albums. Listening to that graceful voice on You Give Good Love and Saving All My Love For You, imagining in my mind that I would be able to dedicate it to whoever was my school crush at the time. In the 90's, she hit her peak with the movie Bodyguard which produced the best-selling movie soundtrack and more Grammy awards. Then she sort of just fell off the map afterwards. Perhaps it was to focus on her private life and marriage to Bobby Brown or maybe it was due to her suspected addiction to drugs...whatever it was Whitney's career was never the same ever again and even her many attempted comebacks just never came to fruition.

A sad end to a celebrity life no doubt (like so many other famous people) but it is in her music that we shall remember her by! And so a mixtape is the best way to do that! The idea here was to put her more uptempo dance songs in the first half of the mix, and then snippets of her mellow slow songs in the second half (with some songs getting the extended play because those were considered my all-time favorites). The slow songs are difficult to mix seamlessly without doing some editing trickery, which I'm no expert in, thus just the snippets. I also threw in soundbytes of Whitney Houston skits from MadTV & Saturday Night Live just to keep it tongue in cheek in the aftermath of Whitney's passing.

Best of 2011 Dance Mix

Hello friends wow has it been 6 months since I last posted something here? So much for my 2011 resolution of making mixes haha...only 2 mixes released this year. That's what happens when you have two babies in under two years, you end up with no free time. Yes, our family added one more little mouth to feed this past summer so I returned to Club No Sleep again. But with them gone right now on a visit to the grandparents', I was able to spend a couple of days putting together the annual music wrap-up of my many favorite songs of the year. What I do is make a preliminary list of songs that I like, then make a final cut on which ones will make it in the mix. Like in previous years, the initial list was like a hundred songs plus. But it got chopped down to 47 songs in the end. I guess I could have made 2 mixes, then all the songs I like could have been included. But...there's just not enough time on my hands!!

Ok, so 2011 I noticed was a year where songs were very much in the uptempo range...like 120-130bpm, which is great for dance music. Even rap music kept it up in the tempo too with many artists collaborating with pop artists or dance music producers like David Guetta. Also the popularity of dubstep grew and sort of became more mainstream...but you won't hear any of that here in my mix haha. I'm just not into that womp womp sound too much, but it sure hits hard with the high school kids at dances. They're always requesting for Skrillex! "Can you play some Skrillex?" may have been the phrase I heard the most while DJ'ing in 2011, haha. Also it seemed like this year Pitbull and Nicki Minaj were both in just about everyone's songs either as the lead artist or as a featured artist. Several of their hits are featured in the mix. But I gotta say my most favorite song of this year has got to be Maroon 5 & Christina Aguilera's Moves Like Jagger. It has a good beat, whistling in the beginning, funky guitar twangs, Xtina's sultry voice and everyone gets on the dancefloor when this song comes on in all the events I've DJ'd at. And that jammy jam is song #20 in the mix. I do want to apologize in advance for a less than stellar quality MP3 on Adele's Rolling In The Deep (track 6), which I didn't realize until after I started mastering the final mix. Anyways, enough talk from me...here's the mix for you to enjoy. Happy holidays, Merry Christmas and I hope everyone will have a safe and fun New Years wherever you're at!

Ultimate 80's R&B Dance Mix Vol 3 + I'm Now On Mixcrate

This is the third installment of Discobee’s Ultimate 80’s R&B Dance Mix series. Volume 3 is super funky and I dug really deep into the record crates on some of the tracks on this mix. Many jams are funk influenced and a number of them will make you say "Oh wow I haven't heard that one in so long!" My favorites on this mix are from Breakwater, Real Thing, Deja & Linda Lewis. Actually...I like'm all and I really enjoyed making this one; it's my favorite of the three 80's R&B mixes. You’ll be dancing and groovin' your butt off to this for sure!

P.S. Yes I realize the Jackson Sisters song is from 1977...but I like it and wanted to put it in the mix...plus it fit well segueing into the Breakwater song.

Also I am pleased to announce that I have signed up on Mixcrate and have uploaded many of my mixes on there. Mixcrate is awesome just like Official.FM as they both host DJ mixes and the listener can download it for free, which is always the best! I Like To Disco! (Disco-House mix)

Disco, disco & more disco! House Heads where you at??!! Let's get down with some House music! Specifically some Disco-House, my favorite kind of House music. My name is Discobee, so would you expect anything different? LOL! The Disco-House sound is just oh so funky and groovy, you can't help but wanna dance to it when you hear it. I think it's because of the horns and electric guitar twangs that is so reminiscent of the original disco sound of the 1970's. As a matter of fact, House music was born from the 70's Disco sound during the early 80's.

On the mix you'll find many songs which samples disco classics from the likes of Michael Jackson, Shalamar, First Choice and more. Also many modern Disco-House favorites from Shakedown, Duck Sauce, Michael Gray and more. The mix was designed to provide you with a continuous groove from 125-130 beats per minute (BPM) so that you can jamm out to it when you're working out, jogging, dancing in your home or when you play it loud in your ride. Plus, lots of whooshing filtering in most of the songs for those that love a good breakdown in a House track. It's definitely not your everyday Top 40 or Electro stuff that's out there right now. So give it a listen, dance alot and please share with your friends all over the world!

The I Like Disco! Mix - 79 minutes

01 Full Intention - The Groove
02 Capriccio - Everybody Get Up
03 Meroz - Your Love
04 Room 5 ft Oliver Cheatham - Make Luv
05 Gorillaz – Dare

The Best Of 2010 Dance Mix!!

Happy New Year everyone! This week we mark the end of 2010 and ring in 2011, which is sure to be filled with new resolutions, i.e. save money, get healthier, blah blah blah...haha! This year I am DJ'ing / partying at the nightclub in the Quil Ceda Casino with my good friend, DJ D-Twizzle of the BetaTesterz. It's gonna be a good time for sure!

Last year, I gave you guys the Y2K Wrap Up mixes which was a compilation of top hits of the 2000's decade. But rather than wait another ten years for another decade wrap up, I put together the Best Of 2010 Dance Mix. Initially, I had over 80+ songs that were candidates for "the best", but that would've taken me too long to compile. So I had to chop the list down to about half of that. There were so many good songs this year and it was difficult to decide which songs would make the mix. What I enjoyed about music this year was that many R&B and Hip Hop artists (like Usher, Rihanna, Flo-Rida) made their music more uptempo (like 120+ bpm), which made it great to mix with Pop songs (like Kesha and Taio Cruz). Also the many Electro remixes of popular songs also heated up the dancefloor.

On the Best Of mix, there are actually a few songs that were released in late 2009, but they made the list because it was a top hit in the clubs in 2010. Surprisingly, I did not choose any Lady Gaga songs for this mix...not that she wasn't a chart-topper this year, but just that I didn't think her songs in 2010 were as good as her debut songs like Just Dance or Poker Face. Still, there are 43 songs on the mix to get you dancing and singing. If I had to pick my top favorite songs of 2010, it would have to be Shakira's "Loca" and Far East Movement's "Like A G6". So enjoy the mix and I hope everyone has a fun and safe New Year's Eve party!

2010 Halloween Mix Set at The Last Supper Club

Howzit world wide web internet readers! Long time no see...I haven't been blogging much lately. You know how it goes, busy busy busy with work, family, life, etc...haha. You may have noticed that I made some changes to the blog. Well, basically all the albums had to come down. I received way too many complaints from Blogger regarding the content of copyrighted material on here so I decided to just remove all the posts that were not mixes. Basically, I don't want to get sued is what it comes down to haha.

Just last week I had the privilege to open up for DJ Lifeguard of Seattle at the Last Supper Club for a Halloween party. Last Supper Club is one of the most popular clubs in Seattle, and for Halloween they had 4 DJ's in 3 rooms rockin' the party: DJ Tre, Joey Roxville, DJ Lifeguard and myself. I gotta admit, this gig was by far the most fun I've had in a long time. Because the crowd was awesome, the folks in costumes were creative, the vibe was right and the ladies were dancing all night long! My set was from 9pm to midnight and consisted of disco house, light hip hop, Top 40 and dance stuff. Then Lifeguard took over the stage at midnight after the costume contest and shredded the floor with his House and electro sound. DJ Tre kept the hip hop heads bouncing in the basement and Joey Roxville party-rocked the 3rd room. All in all, it was a great party for everyone there!

I edited my set from the peak time and got it down to under 80 minutes so that it could fit onto a CD. So enjoy a lil bit of the music from that night! Check out track #25...the Antoine Dobson Bed Intruder Song...you can run and tell that, homeboy!! Haha

Seattle DJs Weekly Podcast

Two more of Seattle's finest DJs: R-Sin and D'Lemma. Together they have created an internet podcast called the Seattle DJs Weekly Podcast, which showcases many of Seattle's DJ's "doing their thang". Both of these guys have mad experience on the radio airwaves and in the clubs. DJ R-Sin was always heard on the mixshows on one of Seattle's most popular FM urban stations, KUBE 93.3. DJ D'Lemma's mixes can be been heard on Seattle's HOT JAMZ station 88.9 or 94.5. I would jump the presets on my car stereo while listening to these guys whenever I'm driving around town. So now you can also catch them on the Seattle DJs Weekly Podcast as well! Other DJs that have graced the podcast include DJs J-Tyme, Estylz, DV-One, Nasty Nes (yes of Sir-Mix-A-Lot fame) and oh, yours truly, Discobee...being featured on podcast #20 with my Slow & Sexy Volume 1 Mix this week. Click on the podcast link and tune in weekly to listen to the Seattle DJs for some hip hop jams, old school jams and even slow jams!

Ok, so I had quite the positive response to the Volume 1 mix based on the number of downloads and feedback I received from my emails and Facebook; I decided to whip up a Volume 2 for y'all. More old school slow jams, all of which were essential during my middle school and high school years. Some songs like The System's Don't Disturb This Groove, Johnny Gill's My My My and Doc Box & B Fresh's Slow Love have always been in heavy rotation on my mp3 player...just love these slow jams!! Brings back so many childhood memories. Please enjoy!

The Slow & Sexy Mix Volume 1

Yes, yes, yes!! Finally....the long awaited slow jams mix! Many blog readers and Facebook friends have asked me, "When are you going to make a slow jams mix Discobee?" I've always put it off, because frankly, mixing slow songs is difficult. The beats are slower, the song tempo switches in mid-song, there are key clashes, etc, etc. But having DJ'd a friend's wedding on Saturday and having lots of free time last night, I decided to go in the studio and give it a shot. After practicing and mixing about four songs, I restarted and recorded the mix. It turned out pretty good, I think. So here it is, the first volume of Discobee's Slow & Sexy Mix series. All select choices of my personal favorite slow jams from back-in-the-day. The songs aren't quick mixed, so you get to enjoy each love jam just a lil longer with your significant other. Volume two is already being thought up in my mind as we speak, so stay tuned!

Discobee's All Summer Long Mix

Happy summertime to you all! I hope everyone had an awesome 4th of July weekend. There's a saying here in Seattle that "summer begins on July 5th" and that was so true this year. Last week was still quite cold and rainy and it even drizzled quite a bit on Independence Day. But the main Seattle fireworks show that was over Lake Union was simply awesome! The last couple of days has been nothing but sunny and 80's + degrees weather. I hope your part of the world is also nice and sunny, too, just like how summer should be. So now is the perfect season to rock out to my latest mix titled the "All Summer Long" mix. Featuring 30 songs that either talks about summer or the sunshine. Some hip hop, some pop, some rock and even a few house tracks in it. Of course the classics like both Nocera and DJ Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince's Summertime are in the mix. Bump this in your ride or on the boat all summer long and enjoy the sun!!

DJ Spotlight: DJ Enrie & Beezo.net and BeezoBlog.com

Beezo.net
Photobucket

So yeah, summer's begun and I have been inundated with weekend DJ gigs and wedding gigs. Couple that with the responsibilities of caring for a newborn and I am just swamped. Been slacking on the blogging tip and I apologize for that. For those of you that need your fix of DJ mixes, I have a perfect site for you: It's called Beezo.net. Beezo was created by DJ Enrie of LA's Power 106FM. Enrie was born in New York but changed to the left coast and he is a uber-talented DJ. His Beezo.net site lets visitors preview and download his and tons of other DJ's mixes, all for FREE. Yes, you heard me, FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!! How so? Because DJ's that want to post and share their mixes pay $20 to upload it on Beezo. But the exposure that many of the DJs have received as a result of having their mixes heard on Beezo is incredible.

For example, currently I have 6 of my mixes (same ones featured on my blog) on Beezo. Four of them (The Y2K Wrap Up, Old School Booty Bass, Ultimate Madonna and The Rollin' Deep Mix) have been featured as "Top 5 Mix Picks" during different weeks on the site. I've met, via email, many other DJs and visitors to the site who have emailed me to say that they liked my mixes. As a result of this network, I've been booked for two gigs locally already. So yes, Beezo is a great place to listen to dope mixes of different genres and to network with other DJs.

There are many big names on there like: DJ Vice, Scotty Boy, DJ Homicide, DJ Scene, Risk One and of course, DJ Enrie. Recently, Enrie and a group of DJs started the Beezo Blog, which features the latest information on the hot songs and sick remixes that are out there. So boomark both the Beezo.net and Beezo Blog sites and enjoy some great music and mixes.

Oh yeah, plus too, Beezo also has a 'bee' logo like me, so yes, it's cool, haha!

The "Ultimate Madonna" Megamix

Yeaaaaa! Madonna! I loved the above picture of her from the Like A Virgin album. I was in the sixth grade...going through puberty...so you know Madonna was very special during that time in my life haha. From her first hit, Borderline, that launched her into super stardom...to all of her 80's chart toppers and the dance anthems of the past decade...you'll get all of your Madonna fix right here in this mix. Everyone who's an 80's baby...a fan of pop music...the alternative lifestyle crowd...and club goer...will enjoy this mix! (31 songs, 71 minutes)

High School Days Dance Mix Vol 3: The Booty Bass Edition

Remember these cassette tapes? Memorex, TDK and Maxell...60 minutes, 90 minutes, chrome type II ones. My favorite were these colorful Memorex ones. I used to record my mixes onto these tapes and then hand'em out at school. Back then, my mixes were pretty sloppy and bad haha.

Ok, fast forward to 2010. Today, I finally had a chance to go back in the studio and whip up a mix. I've been wanting to make an old school booty bass mix for awhile now, because it takes me back to my good old high school days. The days of buying 12" vinyl, Freestyle dance music, Generra jeans, Drakkar and Polo cologne, Sony Walkman and the must have green-buttoned Alpine car stereo. Except of course I couldn't afford Alpine, so I had to settle for the Radio Shack Realistic brand of car stereo. Which wasn't bad...I had the two knob DIN deck with an EQ Booster with Graphic Equalizer! And for speakers, I used to put my home stereo bookshelf speakers in the trunk for some BOOM! Ahhhh those were the good fun days!

So this Booty Bass Mix...it's mostly Miami Bass jams like those of 2Live Crew, Missy Mist and Maggotron....but I also put some dancey hip hop in it as well...like World Class Wreckin' Cru, Salt-N-Pepa and JJ Fad. Real old school uptempo hip hop booty bass sh** to shake your booty and drop that bottom! 30 tracks on this mix, oh yeah, a few songs are explicit like We Want Some P***y, Shake Them T*****s and Move Somethin', so blast it when the kids aren't around. They won't appreciate this kind of hip hop anyway haha. But turn it up loud, because the BASS kills on this mix! Highly recommended for your workouts, as the mix is entirely in the 126-133 bpm range.

My Christmas Gift To You All...The Y2K Wrap Up Mix, 2 CDs!!!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Years everyone! Wow, 2010 is just around the corner and the first decade of the new century is almost in the history books. Can you believe that it’s been ten years since all of that Y2K drama that was such the big deal back then?! People actually thought that computer systems and other infrastructure were going to collapse. But hey, we’re all still here and the world kept on turning. In this past decade, there was a lot of great music that popped up on the radio, in the clubs and on the internet. Being able to download music is probably one of the breakthrough technological things that happened during the Y2K years. Since it is the Christmas season, I’m going to keep with the tradition of giving and share with you my 2-CD mixtape collection titled “The Y2K Wrap Up Mix”. This is a non-stop dance mix of the most popular songs (hip hop, R&B, pop and dance genres) that were either chartbusters, most requested or most played in the last ten years based on my own DJ’ing experience. Some songs may not be your favorites, and others you may not agree with me on, but with so many songs on both CDs (more than 75 tracks), you’re bound to rock out to many of them.

Pop these two CDs in your music player at your 2010 New Years Eve party and watch the party go off! The first CD is designed to be played at approximately 11:55pm on December 31st, because five minutes into the mix, there is a New Years Eve countdown with the voice of hype man Fatman Scoop. CD1 will get the party going into the New Years with many hip hop favorites and includes the club anthem, Be Faithful. CD2 ramps up to the 120+ bpm range as you dance into the late night with chart-topping jams like Low by Flo-Rida and Boom Boom Pow by the Black Eyed Peas. Many of the songs are remixed versions with hype breaks that will have you throwing your hands up in the air! Both CDs contain almost 160 minutes of the best music from years 2000 through 2009! This is likely my last posting for the decade as I'll be busy on vacation, family time, holiday gigs...so let me wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a rockin’ New Years as we move into the next decade!!!

High School Days Dance Mix Vol. 2

This is the second edition of the High School Days Dance Mix series. More 80's freestyle jams and pop dance songs as well as a couple of 90's joints in there. It features many of the well known songs by Stevie B, The Cover Girls and Sweet Sensation. But there are also alot of old gems from artists that you probably haven't heard in a long time, like Lydia Lee Love, Gina Go-Go, Janice and more. All of which will send you back down memory lane to the dance days of the late 80's and early 90's. Yes, I even threw in the theme of Beverly Hills 90210 for good measure, haha! My favorite picks on this mix are #7, 18, 19, 25 & 28.

Discobee presents: The Bar 35 Mix

Bar 35 is the bar where I DJ'd at while I was in Hawaii. It is a super-chill, Manhattan-lofty style lounge that's very popular with the locals there. That night, it was a promotion for a lesbian-friendly event there. This was my first time DJ'ing for an alternative lifestyle event and I must admit, I like DJ'ing for the LBGT crowd (that's lesbian, bi-sexual, gay and trans-gender for you acronym-challenged folks). The gay crowd loooooooves to dance! They respect the DJ and are open minded about different types of music. Not like the regular clubs that have patrons with stuck-up attitudes and always wanna request the Top-40 sh** that's out there. This mix is selected songs from my set at Bar 35. It consists of mainly uptempo disco, disco-house and electro dance music. So go download it and dance!!

Discobee presents: The Rollin' Deep mix (90's)

Photobucket
1978 baby blue Cadillac Coupe DeVille with sunroof, Dayton wire wheels and true continental tire kit
Photobucket
1958 white Cadillac Sedan Deville, all original equipment, no-post windows and 4" whitewall tires

Ahhh how I miss my babies! There I am, in the 90's with a passion for classic Cadillac cars back in Hawaii. I wasn't doing much DJ'ing then, because I was in college, working full-time and into my automobile hobby. That area is the Ala Moana beach park, one of the most popular hangouts in Honolulu. Back then...from like '92-'95..."Alaz" was THE place to been seen on a Sunday afternoon. This is where all the custom cars, lowriders, imports, trucks and girls in bikinis would congregate and check out each others' rides. The music I enjoyed back then was alot of the "gangster rap" stuff like Dr Dre, Snoop, 2Pac, Ice Cube, Lighter Shade of Brown and the Notorious B.I.G. The songs from those days are still popular to listen to today and even at the dance clubs. Girls go crazy when that familiar intro to B.I.G.'s Hypnotize is dropped. With Labor Day just around the corner, that usually means the end of summer is near. But you can always re-live your "cruisin summer days" of the 90's by downloading my Rollin' Deep Mix!

**I did screw up on puttin' Dr Dre's Xplosive in the mix. Xplosive came out in 2001, so wrong decade. But that beat is so gangsta that it belonged in the mix. If I didn't just tell you about it, you probably would've never noticed haha.** Enjoy!

The Flava Mix: 90's R&B

This is the Rumours Nightclub in the Ala Moana Hotel in Honolulu, Hawaii. Rumours is probably the longest running nightclub in Honolulu. It's most popular with the older crowd, for those in their 30's and up. But back in the 90's, Rumours was one of the first clubs to hold "college night" for the 18 and up youngsters. I used to like going to Rumours because I was already in my 20's and I could check out 18 year olds, haha! The DJ played alot of R&B stuff, and in Hawaii, the girlies looooooooove their R&B! This mix, titled "Flava", is a compilation of many of my favorite R&B jams from the 90's. I need to work on a Vol 2 for this because I realized that I missed putting in alot of good songs after I finished this mix. R&B in the 90's still gives me that "feel good" vibe!
