Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a great 2013 NYE celebration. This year (or should I say last year) I gave another DJ homie my NYE gig to repay the many gigs he has handed me over the years. So I had the night off and actually got to go out and check out the festivities in the city. But I really didn't do much though, other than go and see the fireworks show at the Seattle Space Needle, haha. I got a new digital camera for Christmas so what better time to use it than at a fireworks show. We stood on a random corner in downtown with a view of the Space Needle and I set my camera atop a parked car on the street and videoed the show. The I went home and sped it up for an express viewing of the show. Check it out!
Here is the 2012 compilation of the best dance songs that I've enjoyed playing and listening to (minus the boy band stuff, but they're in there simply because they were big hits). Chris Brown, Nicki Minaj, Pitbull, Flo-Rida and the more mature Justin Bieber were big artists once again this year. Pop music really led the way in 2012 for dance music. And don't forget about the South Korean rapper PSY, with his Horse-dancing-Super-Duper-#1-Most-Viewed-Video-On-YouTube-Worldwide-Hit "Gangnam Style", too! I ended the mix with that song, but I used the mash-up version with MC Hammer's "2 Legit 2 Quit". I'd have to say that my favorite song of the year is track #1 "Let's Go". 75% of the mix is in the high bpm range, so it's definitely good energy for working out and bumpin' it in your G-rides! Enjoy the mix and have a great 2013 everyone!

The Flava Mix Vol 2
So this spot that I've been DJ'ing at, Lucky Strike, has two "rooms" for music. The main room where the headliner DJ is at is primarily for higher energy dance music, Electro, House, pop remixes, etc...I play in the smaller second room where it's mainly Hip Hop, R&B, Old School and some Top 40 stuff. It's great because the patrons that can't keep up with the constant high energy dance music come over to my side and chill with music that is more on the groovy, grown and sexy tip. It keeps the crowds balanced and the bar staff and managers happy, therefore, everyone is happy!
Having played lots of R&B stuff in recent months, I wanted to put out another R&B mix for you all to enjoy. Whereas the first volume of the Flava Mix consisted mainly of early and mid 90's New Jack Swing jams, this second volume brings it up a few years to the mid to late 90's and into the early to mid 2000's era (with a few New Jack Swing tracks thrown in). I really enjoyed this mix alot, with stuff from R. Kelly, Ashanti, Musiq Soulchild, the late Aaliyah and Gerald Levert, and so many more. 38 songs and just under 80 minutes for maximum CD listening.
THE FLAVA MIX VOL 2

It's the Big Game Day Mixes! (2-CD)
We are officially into the football season for a few weeks now and one of my friend's (who coaches a junior football team) wife asked me if I could make a mix that they could play on the PA system during intermission at their games. I gladly obliged and started to make a mix with "Jock Jams" influence in my mind. Well, like always...I start mixing and then cannot stop; and I just keep recording and going and going and mixing and then the next thing I know, I have a two and a half hour mix haha. So I ended up editing it down to two mixes, so that it could fit onto a CD for you folks. But that's great news because it means two mixes instead of just one!
This energetic and super-hyped soundtrack is perfect for the football tailgate parties, Friday Night Lights football games, your own workouts at the gym or just about any other sporting activity. It features almost 70 songs of popular and classic dance, rock, hip hop, techno and line-dance jams to get you up, dancing and cheering for the home team on the big game day! It even has the re-drummed version of The Rocky Theme and Digital Underground's - Kiss You Back for the "kissing cam" that's always fun to watch at the basketball games. Enjoy the music and the game everyone!

DJ Spotlight: DJ Christyle (Syndicate Artists)
I got Seattle's DJ Christyle in the spotlight this month. Christyle
is the Saturday night resident DJ of Lucky Strike Lanes in Bellevue, one
of the best places for nightlife entertainment in the greater Seattle
area. Christyle has been a DJ for more than ten years, having DJ'd at
just about every major venue in the Seattle area but also branching out
to deejay at many venues in other big cities in other states; San
Francisco, LA, Vegas, Portland just to name a few. I met Christyle
shortly after I moved to Seattle back in about 2004-2005'ish and
approached him one night at the Bada Lounge to compliment him on his
mixing style (this guy can mix ANYTHING flawlessly!). Soon after
networking with him, he's been nice enough to throw a number of wedding
gigs my way (thanks Chris!) Aside from being a club DJ, Christyle can be
heard late night in the mix on the weekends on Seattle's KISS 106.1, a
Top 40 station. He is a talented DJ, humble, nice and he really likes
Hall & Oates; and that's why I dig DJ Christyle's mixes. Whether
it's a pop music, electro, House, 80's or an R&B mix,
Christyle's mixes are always enjoyable. Check out his latest mix called
Yacht Magic, which is a super fresh blend of light rock and pop from the
70's and 80's. This mix is unlike any mix I've ever heard and I know
you will dig it too! Also click on his website for other awesome mixes!

DJ Spotlight: Mack Long - Born To Mack Mix
As you all probably figured out by now, regularly recording mixes for me have taken a backseat to parental responsibilities these last couple of years. I've really only been able to make 2-3 mixes per year. But I appreciate my blog readers and music listeners for sticking around. Shout out to reader RonChiChio who commented that he keeps my blog as his homepage so he can see if any new mixes came out when he opens up the internet. That makes me REALLY flattered! So I think to keep my blog a bit more active, I will start featuring other DJ mixes on here. These will be mixes from other Seattle area DJ homeys and also DJ mixes from elsewhere (like from Mixcrate, 80's Hits & Remixes, etc) that I like and think you will too.So let's start with DJ Mack Long from the Seattle, WA area. Mack Long is a DJ of impressive stature. When I see him out and about, I feel very short (no offense to short people). But he's a cool gentleman and very passionate about DJ'ing. Aside from being a club, lounge and mobile DJ; Mack Long is also one of the on-air mixers for Seattle's 92.5 FM Movin' station. He recently put out an old school mix called Born To Mack, which I'm sure the pun was intended. I knew I'd like the mix from the first glance of the tracklist, which has classics from the 70's, 80's & 90's. You guys will, too!
Check out DJ Mack Long's Born To Mack mix plus others on his PodOmatic site!

"Bobby Browwwwwn!" + Whitney Houston Mix
Oh gosh...what would I ever to without TMZ the gossip website. I first found out about Michael Jackson's death on their site a few years ago; and then a couple of weeks ago I found out about Whitney Houston's passing from them as well. Another great voice and singer gone too soon...also presumably from an overdose of some type of narcotic. Ahhhh, Whitney...
When I think of Whitney Houston, I think of my middle and high school years, going to the record store and grabbing the latest vinyl record or cassette of her albums. Listening to that graceful voice on You Give Good Love and Saving All My Love For You, imagining in my mind that I would be able to dedicate it to whoever was my school crush at the time. In the 90's, she hit her peak with the movie Bodyguard which produced the best-selling movie soundtrack and more Grammy awards. Then she sort of just fell off the map afterwards. Perhaps it was to focus on her private life and marriage to Bobby Brown or maybe it was due to her suspected addiction to drugs...whatever it was Whitney's career was never the same ever again and even her many attempted comebacks just never came to fruition.
A sad end to a celebrity life no doubt (like so many other famous people) but it is in her music that we shall remember her by! And so a mixtape is the best way to do that! The idea here was to put her more uptempo dance songs in the first half of the mix, and then snippets of her mellow slow songs in the second half (with some songs getting the extended play because those were considered my all-time favorites). The slow songs are difficult to mix seamlessly without doing some editing trickery, which I'm no expert in, thus just the snippets. I also threw in soundbytes of Whitney Houston skits from MadTV & Saturday Night Live just to keep it tongue in cheek in the aftermath of Whitney's passing.

Best of 2011 Dance Mix
Hello friends wow has it been 6 months since I last posted something here? So much for my 2011 resolution of making mixes haha...only 2 mixes released this year. That's what happens when you have two babies in under two years, you end up with no free time. Yes, our family added one more little mouth to feed this past summer so I returned to Club No Sleep again. But with them gone right now on a visit to the grandparents', I was able to spend a couple of days putting together the annual music wrap-up of my many favorite songs of the year. What I do is make a preliminary list of songs that I like, then make a final cut on which ones will make it in the mix. Like in previous years, the initial list was like a hundred songs plus. But it got chopped down to 47 songs in the end. I guess I could have made 2 mixes, then all the songs I like could have been included. But...there's just not enough time on my hands!!
Ok, so 2011 I noticed was a year where songs were very much in the uptempo range...like 120-130bpm, which is great for dance music. Even rap music kept it up in the tempo too with many artists collaborating with pop artists or dance music producers like David Guetta. Also the popularity of dubstep grew and sort of became more mainstream...but you won't hear any of that here in my mix haha. I'm just not into that womp womp sound too much, but it sure hits hard with the high school kids at dances. They're always requesting for Skrillex! "Can you play some Skrillex?" may have been the phrase I heard the most while DJ'ing in 2011, haha. Also it seemed like this year Pitbull and Nicki Minaj were both in just about everyone's songs either as the lead artist or as a featured artist. Several of their hits are featured in the mix. But I gotta say my most favorite song of this year has got to be Maroon 5 & Christina Aguilera's Moves Like Jagger. It has a good beat, whistling in the beginning, funky guitar twangs, Xtina's sultry voice and everyone gets on the dancefloor when this song comes on in all the events I've DJ'd at. And that jammy jam is song #20 in the mix. I do want to apologize in advance for a less than stellar quality MP3 on Adele's Rolling In The Deep (track 6), which I didn't realize until after I started mastering the final mix. Anyways, enough talk from me...here's the mix for you to enjoy. Happy holidays, Merry Christmas and I hope everyone will have a safe and fun New Years wherever you're at!

Ultimate 80's R&B Dance Mix Vol 3 + I'm Now On Mixcrate
This is the third installment of Discobee’s Ultimate 80’s R&B Dance Mix series. Volume 3 is super funky and I dug really deep into the record crates on some of the tracks on this mix. Many jams are funk influenced and a number of them will make you say "Oh wow I haven't heard that one in so long!" My favorites on this mix are from Breakwater, Real Thing, Deja & Linda Lewis. Actually...I like'm all and I really enjoyed making this one; it's my favorite of the three 80's R&B mixes. You’ll be dancing and groovin' your butt off to this for sure!
P.S. Yes I realize the Jackson Sisters song is from 1977...but I like it and wanted to put it in the mix...plus it fit well segueing into the Breakwater song.
Also I am pleased to announce that I have signed up on Mixcrate and have uploaded many of my mixes on there. Mixcrate is awesome just like Official.FM as they both host DJ mixes and the listener can download it for free, which is always the best! I Like To Disco! (Disco-House mix)
Disco, disco & more disco! House Heads where you at??!! Let's get down with some House music! Specifically some Disco-House, my favorite kind of House music. My name is Discobee, so would you expect anything different? LOL! The Disco-House sound is just oh so funky and groovy, you can't help but wanna dance to it when you hear it. I think it's because of the horns and electric guitar twangs that is so reminiscent of the original disco sound of the 1970's. As a matter of fact, House music was born from the 70's Disco sound during the early 80's.
On the mix you'll find many songs which samples disco classics from the likes of Michael Jackson, Shalamar, First Choice and more. Also many modern Disco-House favorites from Shakedown, Duck Sauce, Michael Gray and more. The mix was designed to provide you with a continuous groove from 125-130 beats per minute (BPM) so that you can jamm out to it when you're working out, jogging, dancing in your home or when you play it loud in your ride. Plus, lots of whooshing filtering in most of the songs for those that love a good breakdown in a House track. It's definitely not your everyday Top 40 or Electro stuff that's out there right now. So give it a listen, dance alot and please share with your friends all over the world!

The Best Of 2010 Dance Mix!!
Happy New Year everyone! This week we mark the end of 2010 and ring in 2011, which is sure to be filled with new resolutions, i.e. save money, get healthier, blah blah blah...haha! This year I am DJ'ing / partying at the nightclub in the Quil Ceda Casino with my good friend, DJ D-Twizzle of the BetaTesterz. It's gonna be a good time for sure!
Last year, I gave you guys the Y2K Wrap Up mixes which was a compilation of top hits of the 2000's decade. But rather than wait another ten years for another decade wrap up, I put together the Best Of 2010 Dance Mix. Initially, I had over 80+ songs that were candidates for "the best", but that would've taken me too long to compile. So I had to chop the list down to about half of that. There were so many good songs this year and it was difficult to decide which songs would make the mix. What I enjoyed about music this year was that many R&B and Hip Hop artists (like Usher, Rihanna, Flo-Rida) made their music more uptempo (like 120+ bpm), which made it great to mix with Pop songs (like Kesha and Taio Cruz). Also the many Electro remixes of popular songs also heated up the dancefloor.
On the Best Of mix, there are actually a few songs that were released in late 2009, but they made the list because it was a top hit in the clubs in 2010. Surprisingly, I did not choose any Lady Gaga songs for this mix...not that she wasn't a chart-topper this year, but just that I didn't think her songs in 2010 were as good as her debut songs like Just Dance or Poker Face. Still, there are 43 songs on the mix to get you dancing and singing. If I had to pick my top favorite songs of 2010, it would have to be Shakira's "Loca" and Far East Movement's "Like A G6". So enjoy the mix and I hope everyone has a fun and safe New Year's Eve party!
